Land of 10,000 Decisions
Where was your mind one year ago as the Green Bay Packers and Brett Favre were playing trivial “he said, she said” games with each other? Were you among the crowd that watched his plane land in Green Bay the night of the Packers Family Night Scrimmage with a glimmer of hope that #4 would be back behind center? Or were you among the crowd who were ready to move on and see what this Rodgers kid could do?
Think about your mindset at that time and compare it to your feelings now. Everyone has come to terms with the fact that Favre will never play QB for the Packers again, but some are still struggling with the notion that he could be playing for the Packers’ bitter rival Minnesota Vikings. Pending which players call or text Favre, or tweet about him in Twitter land, Favre could be strapping on the purple sooner than later…make that later than sooner…actually, make that after the mandatory dorm life camp session is over.
The state of Minnesota is being held hostage by one of the most loved, most perplexing, and most egomaniacal superstars of the current generation – and they’re not exactly standing a firm stance. Say what you will about the Brett Favre / Green Bay Packers fiasco, but the fact is that the Packers held Favre accountable to his word. Ted Thompson is the only person in football who has held Brett accountable since he won his 3rd MVP trophy.
I find it completely bewildering that Favre, in all of his pride and greatness, needs to be coddled and immersed in feelings of acceptance from potential teammates. The Vikings have lined up all their stars to blow up Favre’s phone (which is apparently connected to Ed Werder’s) to laud the once great one and beg for his right arm. Adrian Peterson, Jared Allen, and Steve Hutchinson have all been reportedly encouraging Favre to sign – and for what? So Favre can skip part of training camp and have his own space in the locker room away from the teammates who reached out and told him how great he still is. It’s a disgusting contradiction that the NY Jets experienced last year in round one of this awkward social experiment. Now were on to round two, and the only person who looks smart in this soap opera is Ted Thompson. Everyone else…and I mean EVERYONE else, looks completely foolish.
July 30th is the deadline for Vikings players to report to Mankato for training camp. Favre has said he will make his decision whether or not to play by that time. He also said he was retiring from football about a year and a half ago. Should Favre decide to hang it up, it will be up to Tarvaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels to lead overrated Vikings. Think the Vikings brass will call upon Peterson, Allen and Hutchinson to reach out to them for forgiveness?
