Just Wear The Purple Already!

May 8, 2009 By: Greg Matzek 620 WTMJ SportsBubbler.com Posted: May 8, 2009

As frequent readers of this column are aware – I try to come at things from a different angle when dissecting the week that was or the stories that are. My commentary and candidness have left me a bit confused however; as I’m not quite sure if this is a column I am writing, or a blog. Allow me to introduce for the first time in the cyber world, Greg Matzek’s CLOG (sounds better than “blolumn”).

The emotional roller coaster that Vikings fans are being put through by Brett Favre is downright comical…and it’s just getting started. Viking fans who live in Wisconsin are probably more in tune with how on edge Packer fans used to get over the “will he” or “won’t he” play again saga, but to the newbie’s this is a fresh mess. So brace yourself Minnesotan’s – this is just the beginning. The awkward text messages Brett will send to random ex-NFL’ers and beat writers should be considered binding communication; and the passes he throws to high school kids should be considered part of his off-season training regimen. Why? Because this is how the most egotistical and confusing athlete in professional sports chooses to act every off-season.

I’m not so sure Favre wants to play for the Vikings as much as he wants to play against the Packers.  Actually, I’m not so sure he wants to play against the Packers as much as he wants to stick it to General Manager Ted Thompson. If revenge is Brett’s motivation, it becomes a bizarre and sad finish to a great career. After garnering the adulation of millions of fans, and playing an outstanding career in a quiet town who loves every member of their football team like family, Brett appears a desperate and bitter man who finds joy the yearly roller coaster ride he takes people through. I don’t understand Brett Favre any more than I understand the thought process of a hornet.

Saying that Brett didn’t like how his career ended in Green Bay is like saying Jack the Ripper had a bit of a temper. I guess his departure from Green Bay to a place he didn’t prefer to go probably stung and those feelings aren’t likely to go away in six or nine months. In his mind, he deserved to go where he wanted instead of where the Packers wanted to send him. But the Packers, obviously feeling he could hurt them competitively, blocked him from playing for Minnesota last year. Tough crap – move on.

So here I am as a Packer fan – one year removed from losing sleep over what turn the magical career of Brett Favre would take – not caring where or if the guy plays. I could care less if he’s wearing purple, pink, black or silver because anything post Green Bay is nothing more than an awkward social experiment that isn’t pure or genuine. There’s a team 100 miles north of my house that cares about each other and have grown together – THAT’s the team I’m interested in and that’s where my attention will remain.

By the way – if you’re curious, I think he plays in 2009.
