Riverside University High School's Football Head Coach Patrick Wagner here and it’s a great weekend for high school football. The fun and excitement that is round 3 of the state playoffs is upon us. A quick look at some of the local teams and games that anyone who lives within an hour of Milwaukee would enjoy.
Division 1: Bracket
Marquette at Kenosha Bradford: These, in my opinion, are two of the top 4 teams in the state. Whoever wins this should be playing at Camp Randall as long as the level of play either team has shown is stable. A fun option offense against an awesome defense. This game will no doubt come down to big plays.
Appleton North and Stevens Point: The other two undefeated teams left play in Appleton. This will be a hard nose defensive battle. This will come down to stops and turnovers. I would expect the winner out of this game to be playing in Madison in two weeks.
Division 2: Bracket
The favorite seems to be Kimberly, who has been the example of excellence the past couple of years. Monona Grove is undefeated with Merrill, Waunakee and Marshfield having only one loss. The big game here is Monona Grove against Waunakee in Monona Grove. Both are very steady teams who can make plays on either side of the ball.
Division 3: Bracket
The two local (southeast Wisconsin) games are intriguing. Catholic Memorial and Union Grove both came in unranked but they will meet at Union Grove on Saturday. Both are very good programs. We used to play Catholic Memorial in non conference games and I miss playing them, as they always bring their best, which is fun to play against.
The other match up in our area is Jefferson and Reedsburg and the Jefferson story is an amazing one. Between the hardship the town has faced with the floods and the plant closings, this is what high school sports can do - lift up the community. Head Coach Steve Gee was once the Head Coach at Milwaukee Custer, so I know him well, and he has done an excellent job.
Division 4: Bracket
All four number 1 ranked teams are still in it. Big Foot has a tough road ahead but has a great chance of making it to Madison. Over the years Big Foot has consistently proven to be a championship caliber program. This may be their year.
Division 5: Bracket
Division 5 sees two matchups that will prove to be exciting to the end. Brillion and Peshtigo at Peshtigo and St. Mary’s Springs and Cedar Grove/Belgium. All four teams are very good. The winner of the Brillion/Peshtigo game has an inside track to Madison. While the winner of St. Mary’s Springs/Cedar Grove-Belgium game will have to play either the very tough Lancaster team, or a Darlington team that has shown it’s the real deal with a good win over Pardeeville.
Division 6: Bracket
Division 6 sees Racine Lutheran still alive after escaping with a 1 point win over number 1 seeded Shiocton. They face a very good offense in Algoma who has knocked off both the 3 and 2 seeds in their region. This should be an excellent game being played at Racine Horlick’s field Saturday night.
Division 7: Bracket
D7 has 3 number one seeds still in it. Gilman, Potosi and Burlington Catholic Central. Burlington Catholic Central has an awesome program and has scored 79 points in its first two playoff games. This is a well coached team who is fun to watch. They play Shullsburg at Shullsburg on Friday night.
Good luck to our local teams still in it. May the best teams (where ever you come from) win!
