College Saturdays vs. NFL Sundays

Todd Welter Posted: Oct. 19, 2009

It was a crisp, cold October Saturday and I was firmly placed on my couch watching 12 straight hours of college football. Call me a slacker if you want but I consider that good living. Then it dawned on me (maybe it was for the sake of basing the time during the commercial breaks), what could be a better sports day than college football Saturdays?

Your initial response would be NFL Sundays. I might agree but then I think about the pros and cons. Unless you have NFL Sunday Ticket, you get three, maybe four games during a nine hour stretch on Sunday. College football Saturday, you can get up to about four games an hour to choose from.

At the same time, NFL games end in a reasonable amount of time. Some kids complete four years of college by the time a college football game ended. Titanic had a shorter run time than Texas vs. Oklahoma. Isn’t it nice to watch a NFL game and not see play stopped every two plays so the replay booth can triple check a blatantly obvious touchdown call?

Obviously the NFL game is football at its best. We are talking about pros here. It is also great to watch college kids develop before your very eyes. For some of these players there will be no NFL in their future. There may not even be an Arena League in their future, yet those kids go out and play with all their heart and soul.

How can the NFL top the college band? It can’t plain and simple. So advantage college football. Plus, college football has a reasonable overtime system. Then again, why debate. Both days involve football, sitting on the recliner and excuse for getting out of house work.
