Greg’s Manic BCS Bowl Predictions

Greg Matzek Posted: Sept. 14, 2009

The college football season is officially underway! With the onset of the new season comes the annual gaze inside the crystal ball to prognosticate just how the heck this wacky season is going to play out. My crystal ball appears to be pretty clear this year – check out my BCS predictions below:

Title game: Florida vs. Texas

Two of the top three Heisman Trophy vote getters do battle for all the marbles. Tim Tebow goes out a winner in the final college game of his career (only to have a sub-par NFL career). Colt McCoy puts up good numbers, as always, but the Florida defense creates two early turnovers that the Longhorns cannot rebound from. Longhorns are Gator bait.

Rose: USC vs. Ohio State

USC is a very talented team (shocker), but I think they’ll suffer an early loss (perhaps to Ohio State on September 12th) due to starting a true freshman at quarterback. Tyrelle Pryor is the real deal for Ohio State…one of the tougher QB’s for opposing defenses to corral. Should be a great rematch with USC coming out on top.

Fiesta: Oklahoma vs. Boise State

Speaking of rematch…how ‘bout another Oklahoma vs. Boise State Fiesta Bowl?  When they played for all the spices a few years ago, I went to bed thinking that was the best game I had ever seen. Period. The rematch won’t be quite as entertaining as Oklahoma hands it to the Broncos.

Sugar: Alabama vs. Rutgers

Alabama and Ole Miss should duke it out for the SEC West, but the team that makes it to the Sugar Bowl is likely to be the team that doesn’t play in the SEC title game (versus Florida).  It’s one of those weird trends/nuances of college football that stinks…teams usually get punished for losing a conference title game…it’s a joke. So because I think Ole Miss will win the SEC West, I have Alabama in the Sugar Bowl…I know…it’s screwed up. As for Rutgers…well, I guess somebody has to win the Big East.

Orange: Virginia Tech vs. Penn State

If Penn State can hover around the top 12, they should be a strong option for a BCS bowl game. Virginia Tech has a tough non conference schedule this year. They open up with Alabama, and also play Nebraska.  If the Hokies win those games and beat Georgia Tech on the road, they could run the table. I don’t think that’s likely, so I have them in the Orange Bowl.

The team that really gets screwed in the whole deal is Oklahoma State. The Cowboys are good enough to be a top 10 team throughout the year, but because Texas and Oklahoma will advance to BCS bowls, OK St. receives the title of “best team to not play in a BCS game.”

Jump Around.
