A Man Without A Team

Todd Welter Posted: Sept. 14, 2009

The greatest shame a Marquette alum must face is having to answer how your football team did on Saturday. No, this is not a call for Marquette to start up a football program. It is quite clear that it would take about a billion dollars to move the administration in that directions so why waste time?

Instead, I share my plight with you. My struggle every Saturday morning that I share with countless other gold-alumni sweater vest wearing citizens across the country. I am man without a college football team. I am beyond a horse with no-name and I can not choose who to latch onto.

I am sorry but I can not show love to Wisconsin football when I wish plague and pestilence on the basketball team. The same goes for Notre Dame. I could root on for the Big East brethren but I want to cheer on good football so throw that option out the window. I could become a Big 10 guy but I have grown tired of three yards and a cloud of dust.

I did grow to love Auburn for some reason. There was something about war eagle that drew me to them but then they ran off a guy who had done nothing but beat top five teams and Alabama year in and year out and replaced him with a guy that had won five games in two years.

I could become a bandwagon fan and cheer on Florida or USC but then again I do not know if I could handle the heartbreak of that one loss a year because my team did not decide to show up. I could hook ‘em horns as well but being screwed by the BCS every year would be just as worse.

That is why I choose to just root for great college football in general. There is no better way to spend a Saturday afternoon than the feet up and watching the stars of tomorrow excel today. A nice cold brew and nothing to do but watch football—I believe that is what heaven must be like. That is why every Marquette person should say I had a great day of watching college football in response to when someone asks how your team did. It beats saying I could not raise a billion dollars to get Marquette to start a football team.
