Panthers Announce 09-10 Schedule
MILWAUKEE - At least eight games against teams that played in the NCAA Tournament a year ago highlight the 2009-2010 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's basketball schedule, released today by head coach Rob Jeter.
UWM will be tested sternly by an early date in the NIT Season Tipoff with a bracket that includes two tournament teams. Then, the Panthers will face three road contests against tournament teams in December while also getting an early start on the Horizon League schedule.
Milwaukee's regular season will begin Nov. 13 with a game against Concordia-St. Paul at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
The Panthers will take the court for the first time in 2009 with a pair of exhibition contests, facing Cardinal Stritch Nov. 4 and Parkside Nov. 7. Then, after the game against Concordia, the Panthers' first test against an NCAA foe comes against Western Kentucky in the NIT Season Tipoff Nov. 16. UWM will then face either host LSU or Indiana State in the second round of the event the next day. The Panthers will then be guaranteed two more games in the tournament, either in Madison Square Garden or at one of four to-be-determined consolation sites.
"It's going to be an early test for our team," Jeter said. "It will give us a good idea of where we are as a group and what we need to improve on."
The November schedule also includes a home date with Hillsdale (Nov. 21) and a game at Bowling Green (Nov. 28). Then, Milwaukee gets December underway with a pair of league dates, as the Panthers host UIC (Dec. 3) and Loyola (Dec. 5) at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
The remainder of UWM's December schedule includes three road games against NCAA Tournament foes, with contests at Marquette (Dec. 8), North Dakota State (Dec. 12) and Wisconsin (Dec. 23). The Panthers will also host Miami
(Ohio) Dec. 19.
"It's a lot of fun talking about those games and there is a lot of pride with those games because our fans are in the same cities or in the same areas," Jeter said of the annual dates with Marquette and Wisconsin. "We enjoy playing those games. It's exciting knowing those games are going to be on our schedule for a long time and it is even more exciting to know we're going to have them at our place after next season."
Next season, Marquette will play UWM at the U.S. Cellular Arena. Meanwhile, Wisconsin comes back to Milwaukee for a date with the Panthers the following year.
League play begins in earnest over the New Year's holiday, with the Panthers playing at Valparaiso on New Year's Eve and at Butler on Jan. 2. Then, after a non-league game at SIU Edwardsville Jan. 5, Milwaukee hosts in-state rival Green Bay Jan. 9.
UWM will finish the month by playing four of six at home, highlighted by a visit from Butler Jan. 31 for a special Sunday matinee.
February's schedule is highlighted by a game at Green Bay (Feb. 6), a home contest with Cleveland State (Feb. 18) and a home date in the annual ESPN BracketBusters event Feb. 20.
"It doesn't get any easier just because you are going into our league,"
Jeter said. "Our league this year is very, very strong. You go down the line with our league and it is very competitive."
The Horizon League Tournament begins March 2 with the championship game set for March 9.
